Using Free Voluntary Reading in Support of Mother Tongue Literacy

This presentation addresses an issue many international schools are facing now – how to support Mother Tongue development and literacy. Schools often claim they cannot possibly cater to every single student due to the large number of languages spoken. This presentation suggests that the use of Free Voluntary Reading (FVR) as support of Mother Tongue Literacy works – this will be supported by both a summary of available research and two examples of schools which have implemented this model.

The first session (or first half of the session, depending on how many sessions will fit in the conference timetable) will be spent on a summary of the FVR reading research by Stephen Krashen, as published in his book Power of Reading, and relevant second language acquisition theories. Next part will focus on the need for Mother Tongue literacy and its effects on acquisition of additional languages. We will then link these effects with Free Voluntary Reading and suggest a possible model of promoting and developing Mother Tongue literacy in international schools with two specific examples.

The main support for this presentation comes from the research I did for my master's degree project.  This includes a comprehensive summary of published research on second language acquisition, reading, L1 to L2 transfer, as well as my own research at Shanghai American School (Middle  School) using target and experimental groups of approximately 150 students combined.  I delivered this presentation in a slightly different form along with a colleague from International School of Prague at an ECIS Conference in Prague, Czech Republic in 2006, and at the TESOL and Mothertongue Conference in Rome, Italy in 2005.
